This is Lavandula angustifolia, true lavender, grown in Bulgaria and distilled in Australia. Bulgaria's Rose Valley and the country around it now produce more lavender oil than anywhere else on earth, helped by a climate and altitude that suit the species almost perfectly. It is a different oil from Zea's Tasmanian lavender, and deliberately so.

Lavandula angustifolia, steam distilled from the flower head. It is true lavender, the species prized in perfumery and aromatherapy, not the higher-yielding lavandin hybrid that supplies much of the cheap lavender oil on the market. Zea's is grown in Bulgaria and distilled in Australia, and the certificate of analysis records both.
From bush to bottle
True lavender wants warm days, cool nights and free-draining soil, and it wants a long season to develop. Bulgaria's inland valleys sit at an altitude that delivers exactly that, which is why the country has become the largest producer of lavender oil in the world.
Timing decides the oil. Cut too early and it is thin; too late and it coarsens. The harvest goes through at peak flowering and takes the flower head rather than leaf or stem, because that is where the finer aromatic compounds sit.
The flower is steam distilled and nothing is blended in afterwards. The certificate of analysis for each batch records the botanical country of origin as Bulgaria and the country of extraction as Australia, along with appearance, colour, odour, specific gravity and refractive index.
A large share of the lavender oil sold worldwide is not Lavandula angustifolia at all. It is lavandin, Lavandula x intermedia, a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender that yields far more oil per hectare and costs considerably less to produce.
It also carries noticeably more camphor, which gives it a sharper, more medicinal edge, and it is the reason a lot of people say they do not like lavender. True lavender is softer, sweeter and rounder. Both are legally sold as lavender oil, so the botanical name on the bottle is the only reliable way to know which you have. This one is Lavandula angustifolia.
Quality and testing
Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The figures above are taken from that certificate, which records Bulgaria as the botanical country of origin and Australia as the country of extraction.
France still has the reputation, but Bulgaria has the volume. Its inland valleys combine altitude, warm days and cool nights, which is the combination Lavandula angustifolia evolved for. The scale is agricultural rather than picturesque, and the oil is better for it.
